First edition, first impression of Tolkien’s first fantasy novel, a classic in children’s literature. The original printing of this first impression numbered a mere 1,500 copies and sold out by December due to enthusiastic reviews. Only very few copies of this pre-WWII book with an unrestored dust jacket are left.
Original decorated dark blue-stamped green cloth, wove endpapers with maps of Thror and Wilderland in red and black, top edge painted in green, original unrestored first issue dust jacket on wove paper with coloured illustration of the Lonely Mountain and neighbouring mountains and forest in black, green and blue, back flap with the misspelled name of the publisher (Dodgeson instead of Dodgson) corrected in ink. Cover and dust jacket designed by Tolkien. Preserved in matching green half morocco drop-back box (CHELSEA BINDERY). With full page half-tone plate of Mirkwood facing page 146 and 9 black and white illustrations in text, all designed by Tolkien. 310, [2] pp. (pp. [1-2] blank).

Characterization 101. If you’re going to write the devil as a character, then you need to find some sympathy for him. Same goes for thieves, vigilantes, cops, real estate tycoons, murderers, bankers, mob bosses, whatever. Otherwise, you’re just writing forces of nature. Which can work (e.g. Joker in The Dark Knight).

As The Composites nears its 50th image I thought it was time to look at what was popular on the site statistically. Anyone can see what was the most shared composite on the archives page (It’s Humbert Humbert, if you were wondering) but I wanted to add a dimension of literary analysis and break the numbers down to crimes committed by characters when possible. Not all the composite characters on the site slot easily under the definition “criminal” —and like literature itself, the defining elements of criminality can be culturally, politically, and temporally relative and biased—but I think the most compelling composites have a clear mark of criminality or transgression, which makes for a perfect meeting of two mediums: fiction and forensic art. Please feel free to offer any corrections. The statistical breakdown is after the jump and the chart above links to a larger image.

Metropolis is a 1927 German expressionist film in the science-fiction genre directed by Fritz Lang. Produced in Germany during a stable period of the Weimar Republic, Metropolis is set in a futuristic urban dystopia and makes use of this context to explore the social crisis between workers and owners in capitalism.
Metropolis was the first feature-length science-fiction film, and the most expensive film ever made at the time. I had the pleasure of attending a screening of the fully restored film at a local theater, featuring live organ accompaniment. It was awesome.
